    A Hard X-Ray Compton Source at CBETA

    Inverse Compton scattering (ICS) holds the potential for future high flux, narrow bandwidth x-ray sources driven by high quality, high repetition rate electron beams. CBETA, the Cornell-BNL Energy recovery linac (ERL) Test Accelerator, is the world’s first superconducting radiofrequency multi-turn ERL, with a maximum energy of 150 MeV, capable of ICS production of x-rays above 400 keV. We present an update on the bypass design and anticipated parameters of a compact ICS source at CBETA. X-ray parameters from the CBETA ICS are compared to those of leading synchrotron radiation facilities, demonstrating that, above a few hundred keV, photon beams produced by ICS outperform those produced by undulators in term of flux and brilliance

    Conditional q-Entropies and Quantum Separability: A Numerical Exploration

    We revisit the relationship between quantum separability and the sign of the relative q-entropies of composite quantum systems. The q-entropies depend on the density matrix eigenvalues p_i through the quantity omega_q = sum_i p_i^q. Renyi's and Tsallis' measures constitute particular instances of these entropies. We perform a systematic numerical survey of the space of mixed states of two-qubit systems in order to determine, as a function of the degree of mixture, and for different values of the entropic parameter q, the volume in state space occupied by those states characterized by positive values of the relative entropy. Similar calculations are performed for qubit-qutrit systems and for composite systems described by Hilbert spaces of larger dimensionality. We pay particular attention to the limit case q --> infinity. Our numerical results indicate that, as the dimensionalities of both subsystems increase, composite quantum systems tend, as far as their relative q-entropies are concerned, to behave in a classical way

    Nova light curves from the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) - II. The extended catalogue

    We present the results from observing nine Galactic novae in eruption with the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) between 2004 and 2009. While many of these novae reached peak magnitudes that were either at or approaching the detection limits of SMEI, we were still able to produce light curves that in many cases contained more data at and around the initial rise, peak, and decline than those found in other variable star catalogs. For each nova, we obtained a peak time, maximum magnitude, and for several an estimate of the decline time (t2). Interestingly, although of lower quality than those found in Hounsell et al. (2010a), two of the light curves may indicate the presence of a pre-maximum halt. In addition the high cadence of the SMEI instrument has allowed the detection of low amplitude variations in at least one of the nova light curves

    Quantum Measurement of a Single Spin using Magnetic Resonance Force Microscopy

    Single-spin detection is one of the important challenges facing the development of several new technologies, e.g. single-spin transistors and solid-state quantum computation. Magnetic resonance force microscopy with a cyclic adiabatic inversion, which utilizes a cantilever oscillations driven by a single spin, is a promising technique to solve this problem. We have studied the quantum dynamics of a single spin interacting with a quasiclassical cantilever. It was found that in a similar fashion to the Stern-Gerlach interferometer the quantum dynamics generates a quantum superposition of two quasiclassical trajectories of the cantilever which are related to the two spin projections on the direction of the effective magnetic field in the rotating reference frame. Our results show that quantum jumps will not prevent a single-spin measurement if the coupling between the cantilever vibrations and the spin is small in comparison with the amplitude of the radio-frequency external field.Comment: 16 pages RevTeX including 4 figure

    Social prescribing in cardiology : rediscovering the nature of and within us

    Personalised care is integral to the delivery of the NHSE Long Term Plan. Enabling choice and supporting patients to make decisions predicated on what matters to them, rather than what is the matter with them, is a fundamental part of the NHS vision. Social prescribing uses nonmedical, asset based, salutogenic approaches to promote this personalised paradigm, and places the patient central to decision making. We discuss how Personalised care can be used to help people with Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) using socially prescribed ‘nature-based’ interventions to support the prehabilitation and rehabilitation of patients with CVD. The concept of Personalised care outlined and the significance of salutogenic principles as complementary approach to the pathogenic model is discussed. We argue that this seemingly novel approach to using nature-based interventions can help promote wellbeing for people with CVD as part of the wider personalised agenda

    Hysteresis phenomenon in turbulent convection

    Coherent large-scale circulations of turbulent thermal convection in air have been studied experimentally in a rectangular box heated from below and cooled from above using Particle Image Velocimetry. The hysteresis phenomenon in turbulent convection was found by varying the temperature difference between the bottom and the top walls of the chamber (the Rayleigh number was changed within the range of 107−10810^7 - 10^8). The hysteresis loop comprises the one-cell and two-cells flow patterns while the aspect ratio is kept constant (A=2−2.23A=2 - 2.23). We found that the change of the sign of the degree of the anisotropy of turbulence was accompanied by the change of the flow pattern. The developed theory of coherent structures in turbulent convection (Elperin et al. 2002; 2005) is in agreement with the experimental observations. The observed coherent structures are superimposed on a small-scale turbulent convection. The redistribution of the turbulent heat flux plays a crucial role in the formation of coherent large-scale circulations in turbulent convection.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, REVTEX4, Experiments in Fluids, 2006, in pres
